742 Live Animals

742.1 Basic Conditions

Most mailable live animals (refer to 526) are permitted to be sent via air transportation. However, the Postal Service‘s ability to provide air transportation depends on:

  1. Eligibility for Air Transport: The animal must be mailable and eligible for air transport.
  2. Compliance with Airline Requirements: All provisions of airline tariffs and air carriers must be met.
  3. Availability of Carrier Equipment: Air carrier equipment must be available to the Postal Service and support the safe and timely delivery of shipments.
  4. Time Allowance: Potential delays during air transportation, or during subsequent ground transportation, must be considered.
  5. Note: Local Postal Service personnel are not authorized to refuse the deposit of mailable live animals that are properly packaged. Refer to 523.
