In emergencies involving chemicals, Postal Service personnel can contact CHEMTREC (Chemical Transportation Emergency Center) for 24/7 guidance. CHEMTREC provides immediate advice and follows up with the shipper for additional assistance. They do not provide on-site emergency response but may request the following information:

  1. Caller‘s name, title and organization, and contact information.
  2. Description of incident and actions taken.
  3. Number and types of injuries and exposures.
  4. Material detail, including product name, shipper, and destination.
  5. Containers type and size, and the nature of the release.
  6. Specific needs, such as MSDSs or medical assistance.
  7. Location, time, and weather conditions at the scene.
